Sacramento's Artist D.L. Thomas showing his portraits at KVIE Art Gallery

In October I stopped by the Archival Framing Gallery to check out the art show, 'Any Resemblance ' by locally, nationally and internationally known artist D L Thomas.

A fantastic mosaic wall installation of matted, unframed 9"x12", acrylic on paper, amazing portraits of 81 famous painters, sculptors, writers, composers, and well known figures in art history. Thomas stated about his installation, "A key element of the piece was that it could be read in a comic book fashion."
The exhibition is a museum worthy artwork piece.

Thomas states, he chose the 81 portraits at random. They were a mosaic meant to be seen as a single, albeit composite  painting. In executing these portraits there was the risk of controversy in personalizing the faces of so many cultural heroes. The primary intention to each was esthetic, the idea, an individual likeness was a secondary concern. Most images are taken from extremely small black and white photos. The final assembled piece was a cross section of cultural history ranging from the 1400's to the present.

The one I found the most compelling was of Thomas's twin brother, Dean, which he had just lost to an illness. It was highlighted and framed apart from the mosaic wall installation . It was a beautiful tribute to his brother.

D.L. Thomas is accomplished artist, well known for his large abstracts. Thomas has been a part of the local art scene in Sacramento for many years.

Thomas has many colorful stories. about sharing an art studio in Sacramento with another local well known artist Tom Witt.
I especially enjoyed the story, he told about painting such a large canvas, 6'x 6', that he was unable to get it down the narrow hallway stairs to the outside. So he and friends, had to lower the large painting out the upstairs window with ropes to the street. While they were in  the process of lowering the painting, a crowd gathered across the street, at the Caesar Chavez park. Mostly consisting on homeless and passersbys. They began cheering them on, it became quite a event! The crowd cheered and clapped as the painting was safely brought to earth. The crowd became part of the artwork.

Thomas has an art studio in Old Fair Oaks and one in this beautiful villa in Le Sahuc, France. His wife, Vicki and Thomas bought an old farm house, he said was falling down at the time, 1967. They began  restoring it in 1974 and are continuing the restoration to date. They spend their time between the two countries. Thomas has studied and shown his work abroad in many countries.  His intention was not to live in the Sacramento area, but to live in France, which he did for 5.5 years. He stated, "France is a country where sheep and wine are Kings". European countries have an affinity for artists, unlike the United States.

When Thomas's family moved to the Sacramento area, it brought him back.
Thomas and family owned and operated the Le Sahuc Gallery from 1969 to 1978, at 18th and L. The gallery became a conduit with both Universities in the area.Thomas's wife Vicki had become involved with various programs in the gallery and this is where they meant. Thomas and D.R. Wagner, Sacramento Poet, created a well known arts newsletter, Inside Art.  It was conceived as an attempt to have artists write about their art. It contained reviews about visual arts, poetry, music, theater and dance.

Thomas has been involved in the Sacramento arts scene in many ways, for many years. He was a founding Board of Directors member, of the Center of Contemporary Art, he then became the Chair of the Facilities for the Center. He was a member of the Visual Arts Committee. Thomas has been nominated for the SECA Award.

D L Thomas is represented by D. Oldham Neath, Archival Framing and Gallery. To purchase and see these and other artworks by Thomas, please contact the gallery and visit the website.

The KVIE Art Gallery will be showing a sample representation of the larger Archival Gallery presentation, January 5- March 6,2015

You may now purchase my paintings on my NEW website! www.susanhargrove.com

'Her Wings were Clipped'

This painting and more are now available to purchase on my NEW website!  www.susanhargrove.com

I am adding new art, as I am currently working on my new  'Crow Paintings' series. I love crows, they are magical, mystical, mysterious, spiritual clowns!  You will find crows everywhere, poetry is wrote about them, stories are told about them, artists paint and sculpt them . There is such fascination about crows.  I have been reading and researching about the Albino Crow.  They are ostracized from the other crows. They are always outside the circles, or somewhere to the side, a distance away from the black crows.  They will be around them but not a part of the group. Being an introvert, I somewhat relate to this!   And don't you love Edgar Alan Poe's Crow stories and poems!  They love shiny objects and will play, interact, like dancing with shiny light reflecting objects. They really are great entertainment for us.

'Dance of the Crows'

'Dance of the Crows' painting, The crows are having a dance party and you all are invited to dance with them!, No need to feel self-conscious, just fling those arms around and dance like you were flying with them!

Wishing everyone a Happy Crow Dancing Day!

Grief

Grief
Acrylic 12"x 36"

Grief, a subject we all like to avoid, and never post anything negative on your art blog, things I have been told and taught.  Well, here it is in all it's glory. Grief.
Grief has and is effecting me and my life in so many ways, I just can't avoid talking about it anymore.

As some of you who know me personally, know I lost my little Sister, Carrie last year and before that her daughter, my beautiful niece, Dusty Ann.  I have actually lost 9 or 10 people I love dearly within the last 2 to 3 years, I have lost count. It is like everyone is leaving me. I have been broken heart and broken spiritually. I have been trying hard to put the pieces back together.  But, I have come to realize, those pieces will never fit the same way, because too many of them are missing.  Time does heal, in some ways,( in the fact), you learn to get on with your life the best you can. But, you never stop grieving or missing them.  I knew my loved ones, my entire life, they were and are a part of me. Each one was a precious gift.

I have also been grieving other parts of my life that will never be the same, I live with extreme chronic pain. I get sad, I get angry and I try to ignore it. But, the truth is, it has changed my life, it has changed me. I can no longer sleep through the night, if I sleep at all, I can't work even at my art the way I want or used to. I feel lose here too, I have always been a very hard worker, very physical and active.  Now, things wipe me out that I used to take for granted, going to the store, going to the laundry mat.  Please, I am not complaining as much as just telling you about the changes in my life. My life is different now.

What I have come to realize, I am not the same person, I was. I can't go back and own art galleries and schmooze like I use to or help other people in the art world, which I always love to do.  I can only go forward with my new life, I am not sure what all that is or will be, but, everyday I am grateful I am here on this planet breathing and able to still create and paint. I love to paint, I have drawn and painted since I was placed here on this earth, it is part of my soul, and I have no choice but to express it. It brings me joy and happiness and sometimes frustration, but always a learning experience.

All of this came up for me this past week, when I tried to step back into a world where I didn't fit or belong anymore. Grief and Pain can bring gifts as well.  I have changed, and it is not all bad. I appreciate people more, I appreciate my life more, I appreciate everything more, and I say thank you a lot. I am more honest now, I have more compassion. ( Amazing how uncomfortable this makes some people) But, also, I have less patience and tolerance for crap, phoniness, rudeness, elitist, and people being just mean spirited. Life is very precious and each and everyone of us deserve and appreciate to be treated with kindness.

Which brings me to another, yet related subject,  Sacramento has an interesting art world, although it is filled with extremely talented artists, there is something missing. I have owned and operated 5 art galleries in the years I have lived here and the area still has that same energy.  There is a huge lack of professionalism, I am not slamming anyone. There is a level of consciousness here, that can not seem to move beyond it's mental block, even with all the wonderful artists and artwork here in this beautiful city!
I am going to end this post here, because this is going to be the subject of some of my next posts.
So, stay tuned.................................Peace, show kindness today, to yourself and others!

"Often people attempt to live their lives backwards: they try to have more things,or more money in order to do more of what they want so that they will be happier. The way it actually works is the reverse. You must first be who you really are, then do what you need to do, in order to have what you want."

Crows, Crows,Crows!!!!

'The Gossips'
12"x 36" x 2.5"
Acrylic

Two of my paintings have been juried into the 2nd Annual Crow show in Midtown  at the:

 Atelier 20 gallery
915 20th Street, Sacramento, CA 95814

Artist's reception October 11th, 4 pm - 6 pm

It's that time of year, and what a great theme for an art show. I love crows! I had so much fun painting the crow pieces! I add crows in a lot of my artwork.  They are very symbolic, mysterious, mischievous, and beautiful.  When you take the time to really look at a crow, you can see their many colors and color reflections among the feathers. They are fun to watch and each one has it's own personality.  I painted 'The Gossips' because when I watch them, they seem to be telling secrets, mischievous, juicy bits of gossip.....................................

'Clowning Around'
24" x 24" x 2.5"
Acrylic

And of course they play and love shiny objects (who doesn't). That is the theme of my second crow painting, always clowning around, finding  treasures, playing with them, and hiding them.

Kristi Huges, owner of Atelier 20 is an amazing well known interior design and artist. She created her fun and beautiful space about two years ago in midtown.
I got lost among all the unique treasures: paintings, sculptures, jewelry, and yes lots of crows!  Her space has a wonderful gallery, with great natural light.

Thank you, Kristi for including me in this fun show!

Come on down and enjoy this fun show! My crows are looking for a new home, it might be yours!

ART,ART and more ART

As John Lennon said,
"Life is what happens to you when you're busy making other plans"

So, life made other plans for me while I was busy making plans for my art party!  I am postponing my art party ART, Chocolate Cake and Wine party  that was scheduled for this October 4th, to sometime in the near future.  Although, I am very disappointed, I need to take a step back and do some self care.  As many of you know, and as I explained in an earlier blog post, this has been a very rough year for me.  Grieving has no time limits, it takes what it takes. I am going to focus on some healing for the present moment.  I will be painting!!! But, no art party until the timing is right.

Summer is fading and Fall is fast approaching.
I will be out in the world more, showing support for my fellow artists this month.  There is lots going on for September here in Sacramento. I will be checking out The Art Bra show at the Blue line arts gallery  in Roseville, it's a great cause and looks like a fun show. The Blue Line arts gallery is also showing the Politically Charged Exhibit.  Politics and art, always make for a good controversial showing. As who is imitating who. ( or is it whom?) The artist's Open Studios are this month also. A large number of Sacramento area artists are opening their art studios to the public for the next upcoming 2 weekends, You can find the catalogs at your local art supply stores, Dick Blick on Howe Avenue and University Arts on J Street or you can go the Open Studios website to find out more info, sacopenstudios.com I let time get away from me, so I did not enter either one of these, but I am really looking forward to seeing all the great art and getting sneak peeks at the artist's studios.  ( My 'studio' is my kitchen, dining area, so I have some studio envy here). In my walking this week, I finally made it in to the Red Dot gallery in midtown on J Street. Sweet space, small, but efficient and love the gallery owners, good energy.  If you have a chance stop and take a look this month, when you are out doing the second Saturday arts walk. I personally like to go the galleries on weekdays, so I can get close and personal with the art. Enjoy

I will be posting my new art as I paint.  And I will report back on what I see out and about, on my art adventure this month.  Peace

Congratulations Ali Gallo!

Hello Everyone,
I want to send out a big CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! to my very talented artist friend, Ali Gallo.

Ali has just received a purchase award from the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico for a fabulous piece of her artwork!!!!!

Ali is from Sacramento, CA, but, has made Albuquerque, New Mexico her new home for the last several years. Although she is very missed here!!! I am  so happy she is flourishing in her new home!  Ali's creates her beautiful contemporary art pieces from articles that most of us would discard or overlook as having any artistic potential. She can take any old rusty piece of  "whatever that thing is" discard and work her magic to create the most awesome piece of sculpture.  As this beautiful piece,
and this!

A NEW BEGINING

Sisters, my five panel painting, one of my sister Carrie's favorites!

I am back, it has been several months since I started this blog. My intentions and life within these months have changed.  People who know me, know I lost my niece and my little sister. Life can change in a blink of an eye. And mine has definitely changed. I retired from my state job, moved from a house to an apartment, grieving my family members.  I don't think you ever stop grieving, and I will always miss them everyday.  My niece was in my life for 40 years, Dusty Ann and my little sis, Carrie for 60 years, and I am so very grateful for those years. No, life will never be the same, and I will never take one second for granted, here on this planet of being alive.

Life is such a gift. Every breath is a blessing.

Your family is the biggest part of you.  They know you always, they are pieces of you and you of them.

My sister Carrie was so proud and supportive of me and my arts, it meant the world to me, it will never be the same for me. So, now I am starting over again, it will not be the same, but it will always be with her in my heart and her words of encouragement and love in my mind that will keep me creating as I love to.

So, this is a new phase in my life in so many ways, it is an age of rediscovery. It will be interesting and challenging. But, here I go!!!!!!!!!

SAVE THE DATE!!!!!
To re-enter my new life, My wonderful friend, and 'surrogate daughter', (as I fondly call her), Bethany is hosting an exciting ART PARTY , October 4th, 2014.  It is going to be so much fun and we are calling it ART, Chocolate Cake and Wine Party!  Details to follow.  Time to stick my toe back in the water!

I had several galleries representing me over the last few years, in the bay area and southern CA, and they did an awesome job promoting and selling my work, but, alas, as with all the other changes, they have all closed, due to different reasons and times.  So, it is really a new beginning for me. But, I have to say I am excited,  When one (or more) doors close, as they say, Many new ones will open!
So, stay tuned to my new beginnings and updates.

Please enjoy this painting of my beautiful daughter Shana, of course she is much prettier, then the painting, but, God is better at creating then I am. LOL
